Abstract

Technological developments, especially the Internet, have changed the medium "television" profoundly. On the one hand, media convergence means watching television is no longer limited to a singular box with one screen. On the other hand, this is connected to profound changes in programming content. In addition to cheaper formats like daily talks and Reality-TV, complex and expensive television series, rather vaguely referred to as "Quality-TV", have conquered the TV market. They are sold internationally and aimed at an affluent, dedicated audience. The articles in this issue of the Global Media Journal deal with different aspects of what we refer to as "Contemporary Television Series", a less evaluative term. The transnational character of the shows is highlighted in two of the articles, while three authors focus on the perspective of the audience. The final two contributions grapple with the issue of quality as strategies of cultural legitimation and its aesthetic and ideological sides.

Author Biographies

Florian Huber, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg

Florian Huber ist Doktorand am Fachbereich Kommunikationswissenschaft der Universität Salzburg. Zuvor erwarb er den Master of Arts in Kommunikations-wissenschaft und den Magister der Philosophie in Anglistik und Amerikanistik. Seine Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind: Politischer Journalismus, Cultural Studies, Unterhaltungstheorien, sowie die Entwicklung der Massenmedien. Er verfasst derzeit seine Dissertation zum Thema „The Rise of Quality-TV and the Fall of Television”.

Elisabeth Klaus, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg

Elisabeth Klaus, Dr., ist Professorin am Fachbereich Kommunikationswissenschaft der Universität Salzburg. Sie leitet dort die Abteilung „Kommunikationstheorien und Öffentlichkeiten”. Am Schwerpunkt „Wissenschaft und Kunst” (Mozarteum und Universität) ist sie Co-Leiterin des Programmbereichs „Zeitgenössische Kunst und Kulturproduktion”. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind: kommunikationswissenschaftliche Geschlechterforschung, Cultural Studies, Unterhaltungs- und Öffentlichkeitstheorien. Zu ihren Veröffentlichungen gehören u.a.: „Journalistinnen 1848-1990. Eine Geschichte in Biographien und Texten“ (2013, mit Ulla Wischermann), „Kann die Migrantin sprechen? Migration und Geschlechterverhältnisse“ (2012, als Mitherausgeberin), „Identität und Inklusion im europäischen Sozialraum“ (2010, als Mitherausgeberin), „Kommunikationswissenschaftliche Geschlechter-forschung. Zur Bedeutung der Frauen in den Massenmedien und im Journalismus“ (2005).
